Notes - According to family legend, Alexander was eleven or twelve years old when his mother married John Stinnett. He changed his name from "McKissick" to "Stinnett" after his mother remarried and had other children. He was his mother's favorite and she gave him the family farm. This caused an uproar in the rest of the Stinnett family. It went on for quite a while, because there are court records where sums of money were paid to the other children to cover their inheritance from their father, John. On April 10, 1839, Alexander was given 25 acres of land by John Stinnett. That deed was registered in Sevier County, TN in Book F, page 635 on the 20th day of April 1839. On March 1, 1841, he was granted 21 acres of land in Sevier County, by the State of Tennessee. That grant was recorded in Volume 26, page 621.
It was thought that Elizabeth Wilkerson (b. 4/9/1798) married a man by the name of McKissick and had a son, Alexander. That theory has since been disproven. Descendants of the Stinnett family have had dna tests performed, which confirm ties to Stinnett, but no connection to the McKissick family. So, who is Alexander's father?
He's found in the 1850 census in Sevier County, TN: SENETT, Alexandria (39); Elmina (39); John (19); Jahu (17); Elizabeth (15); Jackson (12); Isaac (12); Ausburn (6); David (5); Benjamin (3). [The ages given for these individuals was very difficult to read.]
He's found in the 1860 census in District 1, Sevier County, TN: STINNETT, Al. (46); Elmina (46); Jackson (22); J. A. (male; 20); Asbury (16); David (13); Benjamin (11); Wilson (7); Ira (3); Sarah (9). Alexander was a farmer. Everyone in the household was born in TN.
Alexander and his wife Elmina deeded 75 acres in Sevier County to J. C. Stinnett. (This was property that was deeded to Alexander by Elizabeth Stinnett and Pleasant Proffitt.) The deed from Alexander and Elmina to Jackson was signed in January 1875.
