The children were all listed as farm laborers and were all born in Ohio, as was Rachel. John and Anna were born in PA. There is mention of an H. L. Shirk in the November 4, 1887 Louisville Herald, on page 5: "Why, you are below Canton prices on good servicable goods," is an expression frequently heard from people who visit the bargain shoe store of H. L. Shirk. [Editorial Note: Harvey's obituary mentioned that he was a former shoe merchant.] He's found in the 1910 Miracode Index in Stark County, OH: SHIRK, Harvey (53); wife Cora (50); sons Ray B. Harvey was a traveling dry goods salesman; Wade was a clerk in a grocery store. "Harvey L. Shirk is the owner of a fine residence where he resides near the corporation of Louisville, on the Canton and Louisville road where he raised his family to usefulness and honor. Mr. Shirk is interested in selling high grade rubber goods, physicians supplies and scientific surgical specialties. In his younger days had been teaching school for many years both in his native state and in the state of Indiana, and is generally known for his sterling and worth of character and integrity." [Shirk Family History and Genealogy from 1665 to 1914, p. 23] Obituary published in the Louisville Herald on Augut 8, 1946, pg. 1: Harvey L. Shirk, a resident here 65 years and a former shoe merchant, died Saturday morning in his home on W. Main st, after an illness due to the infirmities of age. Mr. Shirk, who was 89, attended Mt. Union College and later taught school. In 1887 he became a shoe merchant and after selling his business, for the next 40 years sold medical supplies to hospitals and institutions over the nation. He was a native of Osnaburg Township and a membr of First Methodist Church in Canton. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Cora Shirk of the home address; four sons, Wade Shirk of Canton, Donald of Cleveland, Ray of Akron and Bernard of Pittsburgh; a brother, Levi Shirk of Louisville, and seven grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Shirk had been married 59 years and were feted on their golden wedding anniversary, Feb. 24, 1937. Rev. W. O. Hawkins conducted the funeral rites Monday with burial in Westlawn Cemetery in Canton. At the funeral service, Miss Helen Seigrist, accompanied by Mrs. Thomas, sang. Three of Mr. Shirk's sons, Wade, Donald and Bernard, and three grandsons, Donald N., Donald Jr. and Edgar were pallbearers. The deceased was instrumental in having the Louisville Herald established in Liousville in 1887 and was its first subscriber and never missed an issue since that time.
