  • Notes
    • He was born on Saturday, July 30, 1910. His grandfather, James C. Murray (who came from Ireland in 1858) died when George was only thirteen months old, so he had no memory of this grandfather. Three out of his four grandparents were born in Ireland and he was always extremely proud of his Irish heritage.

When it was time to start high school, he went to live with his uncle, George McMahon, who owned a gas station in Monroeville. He attended the Monroeville High School and also worked for his uncle at the gas station.

He's found in the 1920 census in Wakeman Village (Wakeman Township), Huron County, Ohio: MURRY, James L. (52); wife Katherine R. (38); children James L. (13); Robert P. (11); George L. (9); John J. (7); Paul (5); Mary K. (3); and Lewis P. (1). Everyone in the household was born in Ohio. Both of James' parents, as well as Catherine's father, were born in Ireland. Catherine's mother was born in Ohio. James was a U. S. Post Master. According to his daughter, Ann, he was postmaster in Wakeman from 1914 to 1924. This census was taken on the 12th day of January, 1920, by William G. Stott.

His occupation, as given on the birth certificate of his firstborn son Tommy in November, 1941, was Service Station Attendant; City Service. At that time, he had spent 6 months in that line of work. His residence at that time was 7505 Melrose Avenue.

He and wife Marie purchased their first -- and only -- home in 1947, where they both lived until their deaths. It was a brand new bungalow in Maple Heights, Ohio.

Obituary as published in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, May 24, 1990, p. 19, Section E:
GEORGE L. MURRAY, of Maple Hts., Oh., beloved husband of Marie (nee Vourron), dear father of Thomas, Dennis and Lawrence, grandfather of six, brother of Ann Keith, Mary K. Arrangements by Johnson-Romito, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, (232-1441). No visitation.

Obituary as published in the Norwalk Reflector, May 26, 1990:
      GEORGE L. MURRAY
WAKEMAN -- George L. Murray, 79, of Maple Heights, Ohio, died Monday at his residence after a short illness.
He was born in Wakeman. As a young man, he was employed at his uncle's gas station in Monroeville and attended Monroeville High School, graduating in 1928. He resided in Maple Heights most of his life, where he was employed at Pesco Products, Inc. until retiring.
Mr. Murray was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Bedford, Ohio.
Surviving are his wife, Marie (Vourron) Murray; sons Thomas and Dennis, both of Lakewood, and Lawrence of Parma; six grandchildren, sisters Mrs. Berten (Ann) Keith of Wakeman and Mary C. Murray of Norwalk; and brothers Robert of Fairview Park, Alfred of Brecksville and Louis of Wakeman.
He was preceded in death by brothers Lawrence, Joseph and Paul; and his parents James and Catherine (McMahon) Murray.
A memorial Mass was held Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Bedford.

In March, 2015, three generations of Murrays stood on the shores of the Galway Bay and scattered some of George's ashes. He was always so proud of his Irish heritage, but never had the opportunity to visit Ireland himself. The family thought it only fitting that his final resting place be the Country he loved so much.
