  • Notes
    • He was born in a log cabin East of Wakeman, along the railroad tracks on what used to be the John Dunn Farm. According to family legend, the Murrays came from County Clare, Ireland, to Wakeman, Ohio to help build the railroad, although after further research, it is suspected they came from County Mayo. No birthplace for his father, James Murray, has been confirmed.

His birth, as well as the birth of his twin brother Thomas, were registered with the Huron County Probate Court in 1868. They were born on June 4, 1867 in Wakeman, Huron County, Ohio. Their father was James and their mother was Catherine Murray. Residence of parents was Wakeman. It looks like they were delivered by a Dr. Bryant.

He's found in the 1870 census in Wakeman, Huron County, OH: MURRAY, James (30); Catherine (28); John (7); Mary (6); Margaret (4); Ann (4); James (3); Thomas (3). James was a farmer. James and Catherine were born in Ireland; all the children were born in Ohio.

In 1872, when James was 5 years old, a map was prepared of property owned near Wakeman, Huron County, Ohio. On that map, there are two parcels owned by J. Murray. One is east of town, south of the railroad tracks, while the other is west of town, also south of Wakeman Village.

James is found in the 1880 census in Wakeman, Huron County, OH: MURRAY, James (age 38), occupation: farmer; Catharine (age 38), occupation: keeping house; children Mary (age 16); Maggie (age 14); Anna (age 14); James (age 13); Thomas (age 13) (James and Thomas' occupation was "at school"); Cassie (age 7); Nora (age 1). James and Catharine were born in Ireland, as were their parents. All the children were born in Ohio.

James is also found in the 1900 census in Wakeman, Huron County, OH: MURRAY, James (b. June 1845; age 56; married 37 years); wife Catherine (b. April 1846; age 53; married 37 years); daughter Mary FORD (b. April 1865; age 35; widowed; married 1 year); daughter Anna (b. July 1866; age 33; single); son James (b. June 1868; age 31; single); daughter Nora (b. March 1879; age 21; single); son Mattie (b. June 1882; age 17; single). James and Catherine were born in Ireland; all the children were born in Ohio. James immigrated in 1860; Catherine in 1850. James was a farmer; James, Jr. was a farmer; daughter Nora was a school teacher. This census was taken on the 7th and 8th days of June, 1900 by Henry H. Haskins.

He's found in the the 1905 Rural Mail Directory, page 337, with his family: Murray, James, rfd 4, Wakeman, 2 1/2 m. Wakeman I, occ farmer, (Ish), own 100 a. Mrs. James, Anna, Nora, James, Mattie

In October, 1905, at the age of 38, James married Catherine Rose McMahon, who was fourteen years younger than him. They were married 52 years and nine children were born of this union.

James and Catherine's three oldest sons were born in three different houses in Wakeman. The family then moved into a house on Pearl Street, which became the Murray family home from that point forward. There was mention of a James Murry's house in the Sandusky Register published on November 9, 1910 (pg 8, col 5): James Murry's new house is in the hands of lathers.

He is found in the 1910 census living on Pleasant Street in Wakeman, Huron County, OH: MURRAY, James L. (42); wife Katherine R. (27); sons Lawrence J. (3) and Robert P. (1 6/12). James and Katherine had been married for five years. Katherine was the mother of two children, both of whom were living. Everyone in the household was born in Ohio. James and Katherine's parents were all born in Ireland. James was a house carpenter. This census was taken on the 15th day of April, 1910 by Frank H. Snyder.

He's found in the 1920 census in Wakeman Village (Wakeman Township), Huron County, Ohio: MURRY, James L. (52); wife Katherine R. (38); children James L. (13); Robert P. (11); George L. (9); John J. (7); Paul (5); Mary K. (3); and Lewis P. (1). Everyone in the household was born in Ohio. Both of James' parents, as well as Catherine's father, were born in Ireland. Catherine's mother was born in Ohio. James was a U. S. Post Master. [Editorial Note: According to his daughter, Ann, he was postmaster in Wakeman from 1914 to 1924.] This census was taken on the 12th day of January, 1920, by William G. Stott.

He's found in the 1930 census in Wakeman, Huron County, OH: MURRAY, James L. (62); wife Katherine R. (49); children Paul (16); Mary K. (13); Lewis P. (11); Alfred C. (9); and Ann (5). Everyone in the household was born in Ohio, as were their parents; except for James' parents and Catherine's father, where "Irish Free State" was given as place of birth. James' occupation was given as carpenter. The value of his home and property he owned was $4,000, which was actually the highest amount shown on that census page.

He's found in the 1940 census on Pearl Street in Wakeman Village, Huron County, OH: MURRY, James (72), wife Catherine (58); children Mary C. (23), Louis P. (21); Alfred E. (19); Anna M. (15). James and Catherine had completed 8th grade of school; Mary, Louis and Alfred the 4th year of high school and Anna her 1st year of high school. They had all been living in the same house five years prior. Louis was Assistant Postmaster; Alfred was an apprentice in a mortuary.

There was an article published in the Elyria Chronicle Telegram about his 90th birthday celebration:
WAKEMAN -- James Murray, Pearl St., village postmaster from 1914 to 1924 and a state highway department foreman, yesterday celebrated his 90th birthday. Visitors to his home to help him celebrate were his son, Lewis, cashier at the Wakeman Bank, and family, and daughter, Mrs. Burton (Ann) Keith, and family. Keith is the present Wakeman postmaster. Murray was born in a log cabin just east of Wakeman. He married the former Katherine McMann, of Belevue, in October, 1905. They have seven boys and two girls. A daughter, Mary Katherine, lives at home and the other six sons live in Cleveland. They have 30 grandchildren.

His death certificate lists his date of birth as May 4, 1867, although his grave says June 4, 1867. His wife, Catherine McMahon Murray, had been bedridden for many years due to illness when James died on April 1, 1958. Catherine died twenty-five days later, on April 26, 1958.

His obituary published in the Elyria Chronicle Telegram on April 1, 1958:
