  • Notes
    • According to her death certificate, her date of birth is December 22, 1851; according to the 1900 Ohio census, her date of birth is December 1848. It gave her age as 52 in 1900.

She's found in the 1860 census in Milan, Erie County, OH: McCARTY, P. (43); Anna (42); C. (8); M. (6); M.A. (3). All the children were females. Patrick was a laborer. Value of his real estate of $500; value of his personal estate was $100. Patrick and Anna were born in Ireland; their daughters were born in Ohio. They were living next door to Patrick's brother Michael: McCARTY, M. (37); C. (33); James (12); P. (male; 9); M. (female; 8); John (6); Julia (4); Alice (3); M. (male; 1). Michael was a laborer. He and his wife were born in Ireland; all the children were born in Ohio. Value of his real estate was $500; value of his personal estate was $100.

She's found in the 1870 census in Milan, Erie County, OH: McCARTNEY, Ann (50); Catherine (18); Margaret (16); Mary Ann (14). Ann was born in Ireland; her daughters were all born in Ohio. Her husband having died the year before, Ann had real estate valued at $4,000 and a personal estate valued at $400.

In the 1910 Ohio census for Huron County (Enumeration 27; #73), the following information was provided: Catharine McMahon (head of household; age 57; born in Ohio); children still at home: Thomas (age 30); George (age 25); Peter (age 22); Mary (age 19); and Lucy (age 16). All the children were born in Ohio.

Her obituary, as printed in the Bellevue Gazette on August 29, 1918 (p. 2, column 2) reads as follows: Obituary: AGED LADY STRICKEN WHILE IN CHURCH Mrs. Catherine McMahon died suddenly while attending Mass Sunday morning. As she knelt in worship at the Catholic church here Sunday morning death's hand suddenly touched Mrs. Catherine McMahon, highly respected Bellevue resident, and she passed away within a few minutes. Coming without the slightest warning and preceded by no distinct illness, the call of Mrs. McMahon was a severe shock to the family and the large circle of friends in Bellevue and vicinity wherein she was known. The deceased had been in her accustomed health on Sunday morning and was in cheerful spirits as she departed from her home on Louise Avenue to pay homage to the Lord and assist in the celebration of mass. She was stricken immediately after she entered the church and was seen to sink to the floor. Other persons in the church, awaiting the opening of the services, hurried to her assistance but she expired almost immediately, and before medical assistance could be secured. Mrs. McMahon was born December 20, 1852, at Milan, Ohio, and the first twenty-four years of her life were spent at that place, she being united in marriage there to Patrick McMahon in 1866, immediately after which they took up housekeeping on the farm south of town which continued to be her place of residence until four years ago when the family moved to Bellevue. Mr. McMahon preceded his wife in death sixteen years ago. Surviving are eight children as follows: Sister Mary Imelda, of Cleveland; Thomas, of Bellevue; Mrs. James Murray, of Wakeman; Mrs. Louis Everett, of Huron; George of Monroeville; Peter, at Camp Jackson, Columbia, S.C.; Mrs. Alfred Bick, at home, and Mrs. Harry Ball, of south of town. Fourteen grandchildren also survive, as do two sisters, Mrs. John Omar [Editorial Note: This name is actually O'Mara], of Collins, and Miss Margaret McCartnery, of Bellevue. In infancy, Mrs. McMahon was baptized in the Catholic faith and throughout a long and useful life she was a faithful and devout member of that church. The funeral was held Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock from the Catholic church here. Rev. J. A. Michenfelder officiating at requiem mass. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery. [Editorial Note: We think the date of her marriage to Patrick McMahon is incorrect. She would have only been fourteen years old in 1866. We have the date of their marriage as being January 30, 1877.]

According to the book "Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions," her grave reads: 1853 - 1918 (p. 281)
