  • Notes
    • He's found in the 1850 census in Nimishillen, Stark County, OH: CARTARS, Augustas (37); Celestina (25); Elias (7); Celestine (male; 2). Augustas was a grocer. Augustas and Celestine were born in France. The children were born in Ohio.

He's found in the 1860 census in Marlborough Township, Stark County, OH: CORTIE, August (45); Elis (male; 14); Sellentine (female; 12); Marion (male; 10); James (8). August was a laborer. He was born in France; all the children were born in Ohio. [Editorial Note: It looks as if the sex of Sellentine and Marion were switched. Celestine was actually a male, while Mary Ann was a female.]

He's found in the 1870 census in Marlboro Township, Stark County, OH: QUARTIER, August (37); Julian (37); Julia (14); Eugenie (12); Louisa (16). August was a farmer. He was born in France; everyone else in the household was born in Ohio. His real estate was valued at $2,600 and his personal estate was valued at $230.00. [Editorial Note: Augustas should have been about 56 when this census was taken, not 37. It's also interesting to note that the daughters were not listed by age. According to Julia's death certificate, she was actually born after Eugenia. Louisa was Julia's daughter from a prior marriage; not a daughter of August Cartier and Julia Anna Poto.]

He's found in the 1880 census in Marlboro Township, Stark County, OH: CARTIAER, Aughust (66); wife Julia (60); daughter Julia (23; single); granddaughter Anna (6). Augustus and the elder Julia were born in France; the younger Julia and Anna were born in Ohio. Augustus was a farmer.

From the ALLIANCE STANDARD REVIEW, Thursday 15 Mar. 1894: WAS INSTANTLY KILLED The Sad Fate of an Old Gentleman Residing Near Harrisburg While Returning Home From The Mill His Horses Run Off, Throwing Him Out Of The Wagon Upon His Head and Breaking His Neck.
On Tuesday afternoon August Cartia, a well known farmer who has long resided between what is known as the Five Corners and Harrisburg, a few miles west of Alliance, hitched up a team of horses and took a grist to the Louisville mill, leaving home in the best of health and in good spirits.
While on the road home later in the day the horses became frightened at something and ran away. Mr. Cartia was thrown out of the wagon upon his head, and his neck being broken he was instantly killed. One limb was also broken.
He was about 80 years of age and was quite well known in this locality. He was the father-in-law of Jos. Mullen.

From the LOUISVILLE HERALD, 16 March 1894, page 5, column 3: A FATAL ACCIDENT Tuesday as Mr. August Cartier, of near Harrisburg, was returning home from Louisville, his horse became frightened and began to kick. Somehow or other the old man was struck in such a way as to cause him to fall forward over the dashboard and strike the ground on his head. The fall killed him his neck and one leg being broken by it. Mr. Cartier was upwards of 80 years of age and an old settler.

His grave in the Sacred Heart of Mary Cemetery in Nimishillen Township gives his name as "Cartia."

List of heirs in administration of his Estate: Jennie Johnson dau. Louisville, OH; Julia Mullen, dau. Barryville, OH; Celestine Cartier, son, Louisville, OH; Mary Ann Mullen, dau. Barryville, OH; James Cartier, son, Alliance, OH; and Frank Cartier, son, residence unknown.
