  • Notes
    • He's found in the 1850 census in Milan, Erie County, OH: McCARTENEY, Patrick (38); Ann (33); Ann M. (12). Patrick and the elder Ann were born in Ireland; the younger Ann in Ohio. Patrick was a laborer.

He's found in the 1860 census in Milan, Erie County, OH: McCARTY, P. (43); Anna (42); C. (8); M. (6); M.A. (3). All the children were females. Patrick was a laborer. Value of his real estate of $500; value of his personal estate was $100. Patrick and Anna were born in Ireland; their daughters were born in Ohio. They were living next door to Patrick's brother Michael. Patrick McCartney, at the time he died, was 53 years old, which would make his date of birth approximately 1816. Records indicate that he was a native of Ireland.

A story, printed in the Norwalk Experiment on June 10, 1869, reads as follows: "Killed by a Runaway -- We learn that a man named Patrick McCartney, residing near Milan, while on the road between that place and Sandusky, on Wednesday afternoon of last week, was run away with by a team which he was driving; he was thrown from the wagon, striking on a pile of pieces of bricks that had been hauled on to the road to fill up ruts, breaking three or four of his ribs and injuring him otherwise so badly as to cause his death on Saturday evening."

His headstone reads: Patrick McCartney, a Native of Ireland, Parish of Lond., died 6 June 1869, aged 53 yrs., husband of Ann Kearney McCartney. He's buried between his daughter Margaret McCartney and his wife Ann (Kearney) McCartney. (Row 13, Stone 19) [Editorial Note: Patrick's family came from County Louth, so the "Lond." referred to on his headstone could actually be "Louth?"

He is found on page 221 of the Register Defunctorum for 1868 for St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Milan. That record says he died in June, 1868, while the newspaper article and his headstone gave the year 1869. The Defunctorum gives his parents' names as James & Maria McCartney Englishby.
