Everyone in the household was born in Ohio. Leo was a farmer. Obituary published February 11, 2004: Berten R. Keith, 82, Former Postmaster Berten R. "Bertie" Keith, 82, former postmaster of Wakeman, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at his home. He was born Dec. 18, 1921, in Wakeman, and lived in Wakeman all of his life. He attended Wakeman schools, graduated in 1939 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Keith was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 42 years and was Wakeman postmaster for 31 years. He was a charter member of American Legion Post No. 89, Wakeman. He enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles and cross-stitching, and was an avid bowler. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ann (Murray); daughters Mary Keith of Vermilion, Joann Coe of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Catherine of Grove City; sons John Keith of Norwalk, James Keith of Wakeman, and Charles Keith of Fort Myers, Fla.; sister, Thelma Thomas of Norwalk; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Myrtie Keith, one son, Joseph, and three daughters, and a brother, Roland Keith. Friends may call Thursday, 2 to 8 p.m. with a Scripture service at 7:45 p.m., at Morman Funeral Home, 16 Cooper Street, Wakeman. Prayers there Friday at 9:15 a.m. will be followed at 10 a.m. by Mass in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 410 W. Lorain St., Oberlin. The Rev. William Padavick will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Wakeman. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Western Reserve, 424 Middle Avenue, Elyria, OH 44035; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
