  • Notes
    • A great deal of information about Ulrich Shirk's descendants came from the book written by Henry Yocum Shirk in 1914, entitled "The Shirk Family History and Genealogy from 1665 to 1914." This book was reprinted in 1992 by John S. Shirk. Our many, many, many thanks go out to Messrs. Shirk for all the work done to bring us this wonderful book. The following was the preface written by Henry Yocum Shirk when he wrote the book in 1914: In October, 1912, I was visiting my old native home in Lancaster County, Pa. In looking over the Steinmetz Cemetery at Schoeneck, Pa., I found the inscriptions on the various tombstones of our ancestors interred there many years ago, and I felt a great desire to have a genealogy of our ancestry, and made the remark to a niece of mine, "I wish some one would write a genealogy of the Shirk family." In reply she said, "Uncle Henry, no one could do that better than you." Upon these encouraging words, having decided upon the undertaking, it was begun with a firm and confident determination to spare no effort or expense to effectually accomplish the great task of connecting the ten generations of the Shirk family, from 1665 to 1914. My dear and respected kindred of the present and future generations, I have taken great pains in diligently gathering the data of the many different branches of the family tree of the Ulrich and Anna Swar Shirk descendants, in the belief and hope that my effort in compiling this book correctly will be appreciated and prove of interest to the present and future generations of the Shirk family. H. Y. Shirk" There is a great deal of disagreement about Ulrich's marriages. Some say he was only married to Helene Myer, while others say his only wife was Barbara Grundbacher. We're not certain which is correct; however, according to information contained in the 1992 reprint of the above-mentioned book, Ulrich married Barbara Grundbacher about 1695 and "church records indicate conclusively that his five oldest children were born in Sumiswald to his wife Barbara." They also speculate that Barbara died in Europe and it is possible that Ulrich remarried to Helene Myers, a French-Swiss girl. Nothing has been found to substantiate or contradict Henry Yocum Shirk's claim of the daughters Martha and Jeannette [that they were daughters of Ulrich and Helene Myer.] "Ulrich and Barbara were Anabaptists, or Mennonites. As a result of his religious faith, he was persecuted by the Swiss government. On July 10, 1710, he was among the Mennonite Brethren being held in the Bern jail. He was deported from Switzerland in 1711." [Source: 1992 reprint of "The Shirk Family History and Genealogy from 1665 to 1914."] It is unknown where Ulrich resided in the years between 1711, when he was sent away from Switzerland, and 1729, when he arrived in Philadelphia. He was 65 years old when he landed in Philadelphia with several of his adult sons. He sailed, with his family, to the United States on the ship "Mortonhouse." Information on ship "Mortonhouse", James Coultas, master. From Rotterdam, last from Cowes, sailed on June 21, 1729 and landed in Philadelphia, Pa., on Aug. 19, 1729, with seventy-five Palatines with their families, about one hundred and eighty persons. "This family had grown to maturity and ambition when the six sons became eager to reap the benefits open to all Europe to emigrate to America, which occurred in the year A.D. 1729, when the six brothers brought their aged parents and two sisters with them, and settled in about 1732 in Lancaster county, Pa., and there took out patents for more than 2,000 acres of land."
