  • Notes
    • Jess E. Carr, age 91 of Sevierville, went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday, April 8, 2014.

Mr. Carr was born in the Sugarlands area of what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He was a veteran of U.S. Army and served during World War II in the Quartermaster Corps and drove a truck for the "Red Ball Express". On D-Day 3 Jess stepped onto the Normandy Beach and later saw action in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge, the Rhinelands in Central Europe and Ardenness.

Jess supported his family as a farmer and carpenter. While working for the CCC's he helped build the Sugarlands Mountain Trail at Fighting Creek. The trail runs from Elmont to the top of the Great Smoky Mountains.

Later he worked for the Great Smoky Mountain National Park Service for 26 years. He was instrumental in helping to build Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail as well as helped to maintain numerous historic buildings throughout the park. He worked at Elkmont and Tremont and helped build most of the buildings that still exist today.

Jess was a wonderful Christian husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing but especially enjoyed his family. He was a lifelong member of Laurel Branch Baptist Church.
