Notes - According to family history, they came to the U.S. in 1905 and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They returned to Europe and then came again to the U.S. in 1920 on a French ship and settled in Cleveland, Ohio. That seems to be substantiated by the following records: We found a Charlotte Weinhold, who came to the U.S. (through Ellis Island) on October 2, 1905. She was 6 years old at that time and was traveling, with her mother Charlotte Weinhold and sister Elizabeth Weinhold, to Berwick, Pennsylvania to join her father. The name and address given for her father were: John Weinhold, 622 LaSalle, Berwick, PA. Her nationality (country of which she was a citizen) was Hungary, her race was German and her place of residence was Segesvar. She traveled on the ship: Vaderland which left Antwerp, Belguim on September 23, 1905. We also found a Lotte Weinhold, who came to the U.S. (through Ellis Island) on December 17, 1920. She was 22 years old at that time. Her ethnicity was Roumanian/German and her place of residence was Sighisoara, Roumania. She traveled on the ship: La Touraine which sailed from Le Havre, Seine-Inferior, France.
She's found in the 1930 census in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, OH, living two households away from her future husband, Adolf Hoffman: KARRES, Lottie (32; widowed); daughter Gertrude (7); sister Elizabeth LOEW (29); brother-in-law Karl LOEW (34) and nephew Eckhart LOEW (10). Everyone in the household was born in Romania, except for Gertrude, who was born in Ohio. They all immigrated to the U.S. in 1920. Karl was a machinist for a drill company.
He's found in the 1940 census on Dale Avenue, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, OH: HOFFMAN, Lottie (42; widowed); son Adolph (8); daughter Gertrude KARRES (17); lodgers Frank VINT (?) (40) and Arthur SCHALAMON (33). Lottie and Frank were born in Romania; Adolph and Gertrude in Ohio; and Arthur in Austria. Frank was owner / operator; own gas station. Arthur worked at auditing / bookkeeper.
When she applied for a Social Security card in February, 1967, she gave her name as Lotte Guenther; maiden name Lotte Weinhold; date of birth 4-1-1898; place of birth Roumania; mother Lotte Radel; father John Weinhold.
