JOHN P. McMAHON
Feb. 8, 1919 - May 24, 2006
UPPER ARLINGTON -- John P. McMahon, 87, of Upper Arlington, died Wednesday at Riverside Methodist Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 8, 1919 in Monroeville to the late George and Eleanor (Ruffing) McMahon.
He graduated from Monroeville High School, Class of 1936 and attended Ohio Northern University. He then graduate cum laude with his bachelor of arts degree from The Ohio State University in 1940 and summa cum laude with his Juris Doctor degree in 1942.
During World War II, he enlisted as a Communications Cadet in the Army Air Corps and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Captain. He then began his law career in Columbus as an associate partner at the law firm of Dargusch, Caren, Greek & King where he later became a partner of George, Greek, King & McMahon which ultimately merged with the firm of Baker & Hostetler where he continued to practice until 1989. He was considered an expert on transportation matters involving the Interstate Commerce Commission, the Department of Transportation, and the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.
He was a member of the Ohio Bar Assn., the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court, Columbus Bar Assn., Transportation Lawyers' Assn., Lion's Club, The Athletic Club of Columbus, and The Faculty Club at OSU. He also served on the Board of the National Council of the OSU College of Law and on the Board of the Columbus Cancer Clinic.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Echard McMahon, whom he married in 1987; children, Colleen (Frank Sica) McMahon of Bronxville, NY, Kevin (Nancy) McMahon of Jackson, Tenn., Patricia (Bruce) McCutcheon of Easton, Pa., Brian (Karin) McMahon of Santa Fe, NM, Barry (Christine) McMahon of Upper Arlington and Michael (Elizabeth) McMahon of Burlington, Vt.; 18 grandchildre, two nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1983, Patricia (McDanel) McMahon; a sister in 1999, Mary Young; and an infant brother and sister, Robert and Rita McMahon.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Road, Upper Arlington. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Agatha Catholic Church, 1860 Northam Road, with Msgr. David R. Funk, Celebrant. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Lewis Center, Ohio.
