  • Notes
    • She's found in the 1860 census in Marlboro, Stark County, Ohio: LAWYER, Nicholas (40); Julian (40); Justus (11); Frederick (10); Louisa (8); Julia (3); Jane (2). Nicholas and Julian were born in France; the remainder of the household in Ohio. Nicholas was a laborer.

She's found in the 1870 census in Marlboro Township, Stark County, OH: QUARTIER, August (37); Julian (37); Julia (14); Eugenie (12); Louisa (16). August was a farmer. He was born in France; everyone else in the household was born in Ohio. His real estate was valued at $2,600 and his personal estate was valued at $230.00. [Editorial Note: Augustas should have been about 56 when this census was taken, not 37. It's also interesting to note that the daughters were not listed by age. According to Julia's death certificate, she was actually born after Eugenia. Louisa was Julia's daughter from her marriage; not a daughter of August Cartier and Julia Anna Pattot.]

On June 7th, 1875, August Cartier applied for a marriage license for Jacob Shirk and Jennie Cartier: "State of Ohio, Stark County, SS: Personally came August Cartier applying for License for Jacob K. Shirk to be married to Jennie Cartier who being duly sworn, says that the said Jacob K. ---- is over the age of twenty-one years, and is unmarried, that the said Jennie C--- is over the age of 16 years & 10 months and is unmarried, resides in Stark County, and that he knows of no legal impediment to said marriage , parties are not related to each other & I consent to the marriage of my daughter. /s/ August Cartier. Sworn to and subscribed before me, this 7th day of June, A.D. 1875." The marriage took place on June 10, 1875.

She's found in the 1880 census in St. Joseph County, Indiana: Portage Twp., Marion Street, South Bend: SHIRK, Jacob, 28 (born in Ohio; father in PA; mother in Ohio; Jennie, 22 (born in Ohio; both parents born in France); Allie, 4 (born in Ohio, both parents born in Ohio); Manda, 2 (born in Indiana; both parents born in Ohio); Monroe, 6/12 (b. Nov.) (born in Indiana; both parent born in Ohio).

On August 5, 1884, Isaiah Johnson applied for a marriage license in Stark County, Ohio: State of Ohio, Stark County, SS: personally Isaiah J. Johnson applying for License for himself to be Married to Jane Shirk, who being sworn, says that he is over the age of twenty-one years, and is unmarried, that the said Jane Shirk is over the age of eighteen years, and is unmarried, resides in Stark County, and that they are not nearer akin than second cousin, and he knows of no legal impediment to said marriage. /s/ Isaiah J. Johnson They were married on August 5, 1884 by Jonathan Hudson, Justice of the Peace for said County.

When Augustus Cartier died in 1894, in administration of his Estate, his heirs were named as follows: Jennie Johnson dau. Louisville, OH; Julia Mullen, dau. Barryville, OH; Celestine Cartier, son, Louisville, OH; Mary Ann Mullen, dau. Barryville, OH; James Cartier, son, Alliance, OH; and Frank Cartier, son, residence unknown. [Editorial Note: In 1870, Julia, Eugenia and Louise (all daughters of Julia Poto Lair, from her first marriage) where listed with Augustus and Julia as Cartier. When he died, Augustus named Julia and Eugenia as his heirs, but not Louise?]

Eugenia is found in the 1900 Census, Marlboro Township, Stark County, Ohio: Jennie Johnson, b. Aug. 1857; age 42; widow; 8 children, 5 living born Ohio; both parents b. in France In addition to her sons, there are listed: Austin Landon, grandchild, b. Mar. 1892, age 8 Elsie Sherrick, grandchild, b. May 1894, age 6

Jennie died 11 June 1901, Stark Co. Her cause of death is listed as paralysis.

Jennie wrote her Will on the 16th day of Feb. 1901; it was probated on the 15th day of June 1901. Jennie's Will:

/s/ Jennie Johnson -- by her mark

When the Application to Probate Will was filed, her heirs were listed as follows: Manda Vourron, daughter, Canton, O. Ellen Landon, daughter, Buffalo, N.Y. Lloyd Johnson, aged 16 years, son, Barryville, O. Harvey Johnson, aged 11 years, son, Barryville, O. Florin Johnson, aged 9 years, son, Barryville, O.

Obituary from Louisville Herald, 6/13/1901, p. 1: DIED. Mrs. Jennie Johnson died at her home at Five Corners, Monday afternoon, after a long illness caused by paralysis. Two daughters and one son survive. The funeral services were held at the Catholic church, at Barryville, this morning, and the remains were buried in the adjoining cemetery. Mrs. Johnson was the wife of Isaiah Johnson, who was killed at the boiler explosion which occurred at the Louisville Brick & Tile Co.'s works a few years ago.

She's buried in Row 8 of the Sacred Heart of Mary Cemetery in Nimishillen Township, Stark County, Ohio. According to her grave, her date of birth was August 11, 1858; however, family history indicates that it was actually August 11, 1857.

When her son Floren L. Johnson married in 1914, his parents' names were given as Isaac Johnson and Jane Cautchey. When he died in 1946, his parents' names were given on his death certificate as Isaiah Johnson (born Lexington Township, Ohio) and Jennie Cartier (born Marlboro, Ohio).

DNA tests have confirmed a connection between Eugenia's great grandson, and a great grandchild of Joseph Lair, son of Nicholas Lair and Julia Poto.
