    • Dorothy Ethel Brown Washko
      Dorothy Ethel Brown Washko, age 89 of Southern Pines, passed away on Monday, October 11, 2010 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. Born on February 11, 1921 in Warwick, Rhode Island to the late James S. Brown and Ethel Marie Steele Brown. She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. At the time of her passing, she was a resident of Penick Village. Mrs. Washko was a veteran of her country and served in the United States Navy Piedmont # 44 Waves during WWII. She spent most all of her life visiting and caring for nursing home residents. She was a longtime member of the International Order of St. Luke. She is survived by two daughters: Dorothy Anne Bement and husband Ronald of Southern Pines, NC and Sandra Elizabeth Washko of Greenville, SC; one brother, Samuel Brown of Hope, Rhode Island; three sisters: Joyce Fletcher of Westerly, RI; Meredith Besse of Westerly, RI; and Caroline Knox of Westerly, RI. Three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Edward J. Washko; her son, David E. Washko; and two sisters, Joan Dyer and Velna Westgate. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 11:00 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines with Rev. John Tampa officiating. Committal will take place at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Southern Pines following the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to The Penick Village, PO Box 2001, Southern Pines, NC 28388. Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines is serving the family.
